SMART KITCHEN LIGHTING

Kitchen 3 1100x642 1

Summer, the days are longer, meaning we can make more use of natural light in our homes. But what about when the nights start to get longer? If you’re thinking about a new kitchen, good kitchen lighting can make a big difference. Start by thinking about how your space benefits from natural light and how to make the best use of it. Also, If you’re thinking about an extension you might want to consider improving light levels with glazing, bi-fold doors and roof-lights> Here at K&M we can help you make the best decision both within your space and budget.

When it comes to artificial lighting don’t consider anything until you’ve decided where your units, appliances, furniture and fittings will be located. Elcio and the team can help you design the best layout to suit your space and natural light. Always choose the styles you wish to include early, as this will determine the quantity you need and impact your budget.

The cost of the lighting will depend on the size of your space, requirements and chosen designs. However, when redesigning your kitchen, updating light fittings to more energy-efficient LEDs is a good idea. Although these will cost more than standard halogen or compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs), the bulbs will last for up to 25 years and can offer different shades of light to suit your needs. Remember that if you want lots more lighting than you already have, which will require rewiring, this will impact your budget, so you’ll need to take this into account at an early stage.

LEDs are most certainly the way forward when it comes to lighting. In comparison to outdated halogen bulbs, they’re a far more cost-effective and eco-friendly solution. The low wattage of LED lights means that energy consumption is reduced, and they also last longer. LEDs will last for up to 40,000 hours compared to the 3,000 hour lifespan of halogens.

Here are a few things to consider with kitchen lighting.

  • Don’t put lights too close to cabinetry as if you have low ceilings, the glare from the lights could discolour the veneer.
  • If you have low ceilings, don’t fit too many lights or the look could end up being overpowering.
  • Use spotlights on dimmer switches so you can easily control light levels.
  • Include mood and task lighting in a scheme so that when you’ve finished cooking you can turn the bright lights down and have accents more suited to a sociable eating environment – not bright or harsh lighting.
  • Think carefully about where the switches are positioned and don’t overlook the details.
Make sure light switches are compatible with the style of your kitchen.
  • Consider colour temperature to get the level of light and ambience you require.
